Kent State (12-12, 5-4 Mid-American Conference) left a late lead behind and fell 8-7 at Toledo (7-19, 5-8) at the start of a four-game weekend series on Friday in Schoonover.
Golden Flashes ace Luke Albright hit 12 career batters but only lasted five innings after throwing 113 pitch. Albright allowed three runs (1 earned) with five hits and went four batters.
Albright left the game 7-3. Collin Mathews snapped a two-run homer and added a prey fly. Michael Turner delivered a single with two runs, while Justin Miknis and Cam Touchette each tackled RBI doubles to get the flashes under control.
Scott Mackiewicz hit two solo homers to get the Rockets back into play, and Trace Hatfield landed a two-run homer to complete an eighth four-run that put the visitors in the lead.
Kent State sop reliever Jack Kartsonas suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief despite scoring four hits.
