HAMPTON, Virginia (AP) – Elijah Burris contributed 15 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns – two came late in the fourth quarter – and Hampton pulled away in one season opener for a 42-28 win over Virginia Union, a Division II member .
VUU’s Khalid Morris teamed up with Desmond Smith for a 41-yard TD, tying the score at 28 with 11:08 points remaining. But Burris ran the following kickoff 51 yards back and then crowned a four-game drive with a 1-yard scoring run with 9:05 to play. Burris ran 30 yards for a TD at 3:29 to get the game out of reach.
Norfolk State fell to Toledo 49-10 to open their season. The Spartans (0-1) will travel to Wake Forest for their second game of the season.
