CINCINNATI – Bengal’s offensive tackle D’Ante Smith is already making great strides towards becoming an NFL tackle.
The rookie has gained nearly 30 pounds since the 2020 college football season began.
Smith is up to 311 pounds after Geoff Hobson from Bengals.com. He was for the Senior Bowl earlier this year in the mid-290s and weighed ECU 283 at the 2020 season opener.
“It brings length and sportiness with 35-inch arms. He’s a really nimble athlete [with] great feet ” Bengal’s offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said during the draft. “He’s got all the qualities you’d look for in a tackle, and he’s a real tackle. When you get to this point in the design, you’re trying to find things that translate (into the NFL) and with those You can work – -[things] you cannot teach. You know 35-inch arms and athleticism are things guys naturally have. It’s not something that you can really just make someone longer. So (I) am very excited about this part of his game. We had no concerns about injuries. Everything checked out for us. “
Cincinnati selected Smith in the fourth round (139th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft. Its 35.5-inch arms and 85-inch wingspan are exactly what NFL teams are looking for in a tackle.
If he can keep gaining weight and maintain his athleticism, there is no reason why he can’t help but solve the Bengals’ offensive line problems.
