The Cincinnati Reds (19-23) desperately need a win to stop the bleeding of a lost four-game skid. The Reds will play the first of three games against the Milwaukee Brewers (21-22) tonight at 7:10 p.m. The Reds play 5.5 games in NL Central. They are 1.5 games behind the Brewers for third place. Fangraphs currently has the Brewers with a 35.7% chance of winning the division (Cardinals are at 37.4%, Reds at 7.7%), so a battle for third place in the division is no big deal too Seems to be brewers would be a nice move for the Reds.

This will be the Reds’ first run of the season against the Brewers. The last time these two teams met was in Cincinnati in September 2020. The Reds won 2 out of 3 for everyone, but they made a trip into the postseason. The Brewers are only 4-11 in their last 15 games. The Brewers’ two best players (pitcher or position player) in fWAR are SP Corbin Burnes (2.2 fWAR) and Brandon Woodruff (1.8 fWAR). The Reds are fortunate enough to miss both pitchers in this series. The brewers take 27th place in MLB in OPS (.654). You have scored 1 run or less in 6 of your last 12 games.

Program Note: Today’s game is exclusive to FOX Sports 1. It will be Kevin Burkhardt and Eric Karros’ turn.

Start pitchers

Jeff Hoffman has a 7.53 ERA / 5.44 FIP over its last four starts. He has run 11 batters in 14.1 innings. Hoffman has a career of 2.70 ERA in 2 starts against the Brewers.

Adrian Houser has a career of 5.64 ERA in 22.0 IP against the Reds and has allowed 7 home runs. Houser started with two quality starts in May but failed to make it past the third inning on his last start when he ran 5 batters.

Messages and Notes

Roster moves in abundance

The Cincinnati Reds put Nick Senzel and Wade Miley on their list of injured before the game this afternoon. They also named Carson Fulmer for the service, promoting outfielder Scott Heineman and right-handers Ashton Goudeau and Brad Brach. Doug Gray I wrote about it in a little more detail here if you want to read.

David Bell says Tyler Stephenson will play first base, and Scott Heineman can play first base in addition to the other infielders they have experience there.

Bell says Tejay Antone “is always a consideration” for this point start, but “he did so well out of the bullpen and is so important to our bullpen.”

“No decision has been made yet.”

Brad Brach was one of the best helpers in baseball between 2015 and 2018. He has thrown fewer than 15 MLB innings in each of the last two seasons but has an ERA of 0.00 in Triple-A this year.

Like Wade Miley, Brach relies on his cutter and change.

Conclusion

This series as a whole seems like a good matchup for the Reds to get back on track. Today’s matchup is probably the weekend’s biggest challenge, but Winker, Castellanos and Suarez together have 6 HR in 31 bats against Adrian Houser. Tonight is a good time to get the good vibes back. Go Reds!
