The city will rehabilitate almost 15 times as many streets compared to 2020, as the funds will be supplied from the temporary income tax of 1/4%.
TOLEDO, Ohio – Wednesday marks the start of the residential refurbishment season in Glass City.
Like many streets in the city’s neighborhood, Beechway Boulevard in the south of Toledo has seen better days and is long overdue for repairs.
“The road has deteriorated so much. It’s one of the major thoroughfares in the neighborhood, so there is a lot of traffic and a lot of pedestrian traffic,” said Allison Snyder, director of Beverly Block Watch
For this reason, Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz held a press conference there to launch the 2021 residential street rehabilitation program in the city.
According to the mayor, the residential renovation program will be almost 15 times what it was in 2020 thanks to additional funding from the 1/4 percent income tax approved by voters in November.
“Do you remember when we said in Issue 4 that we would fix a few roads? Well, here it is. It is us,” said Mayor Kapszukiewicz.
In 2020 the city of Toledo was able to rehabilitate only 7 residential streets.
However, in 2021 they will make 109.
It’ll come out to about 42 miles of road repair.
The city will receive an additional $ 20 million annually from temporary income tax for 4 years.
City officials believe the additional construction will be a boon to the local economy.
“$ 20 million a year for the next 4 years – that’s actually a boost for our economy too. You know, there are hard working men and women working here in Toledo who have their hands full doing the job do it, “he told Kapszukiewicz.
For the residents of Beechway Boulevard, it is worth it when the renovation work begins on their street.
“I’m all for it, I’m all for improvements to be made where they are needed. I love my city, and things like that are necessary,” said April Rumschlag, who has lived in Beverly for more than five years
Mayor Kapszukiewicz says all 109 contracts have already been awarded and all projects are expected to be completed by mid-October.
