Toledo talks Solheim Cup

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Solheim Cup is less than 6 months away and the city is preparing. One of the biggest events in golf is coming to Toledo and bringing concerts with stars and thousands of people.

Preparations for the 17th Solheim Cup are underway in downtown Toledo. The City Council’s Committee on Regional Growth, Development and Small Business met this afternoon to discuss all the details.

“We want everyone to go away and feel like Toledo,” says Mona Shousher, one of ProMedica’s planners.

VIP tickets for the opening ceremony, a Friday evening concert with Gwen Stefani as headliner in the Promenadenpark, are almost sold out. General admission is still possible. The concert has space for 30,000 people.

“The biggest concert we’ve had so far was 15,000 people, and that was Diana Ross. The extent is twice as high in relation to the people, ”says Gretchen DeBacker, Legislative Director of Toledo.

There are already 95,000 registered for the golf tournament.

As for COVID, there will be hand washing stations and disinfectants everywhere, but we don’t have a final word on masks and temperature checks. The organizers have no idea what the coronavirus situation will look like in September but are preparing for several scenarios.

While the meeting went into the details, there was excitement about what this could mean for the city. Local artists, musicians, restaurants and venues will be exhibited during the event.

“I think downtown Toledo is a popular place, and just to show how much it has grown, I’m looking forward to it,” said Vanice Williams, councilor for the 4th district.

The council members present are looking forward to more major events in the city and believe that the Solheim Cup is the first step towards a new chapter in the city’s history.
