BOILING SPRINGS, NC – On Saturday afternoon, Gardner-Webb Runnin ‘Bulldogs Softball shared the day’s games. Gardner-Webb defeated the Toledo Rockets with a 9-3 final score. While you lose the following game against Saint Francis Red Flash with a final score of 13-0.
Game One Recap (9-3, Gardner-Webb):
Head coach Tom Cole and his softball team eventually managed to score their first win of the season against the Toledo Rockets.
Gardner-Webb took an early advantage in the first inning by loading the bases. With Jenna Wacaster Andrea Lyon, and Dreary Horrell on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd; Molly Montgomery was able to score the first goal after a mistake by Toledo’s second baseman and give the ‘Dogs a 3-0 advantage.
In the second inning, the Runnin ‘Bulldogs extended their lead when Horrell scored a home run and allowed it to Weslyn Almond and Leslie McNeil Cross home plate. Andrea Lyon Then she hit another homer to get herself home. Later in the second round, Wacaster crossed home plate again from a double Molly Montgomery. 8-0, Gardner-Webb.
Then in the third inning, Katie Mitchell scored 9-0 with a double from Almond.
The Toledo Rockets were able to execute three runs on the board in their bat game in the fifth inning, but it wasn’t enough to take the Runnin ‘Bulldogs lead that was held for the remainder of the game.
Review of the second game (13-0, Saint Francis):
Grace Vesco pitched for Saint Francis and won the Runnin ‘Bulldogs. Vesco only allowed one hit. The only hit in the game came from a single from Almond, who was the lead-off batsman for GWU.
There was a walk in the game for Gardner-Webb that was given to catcher Montgomery in the second inning.
Myers, Lyon and Horrell each saw action on the hill against the Red Lightning. The trio of pitchers allowed four hits each, which corresponds to a total of 12 hits. Myers allowed six runs, Lyon allowed five runs and Horrell allowed two.
Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action tomorrow March 14thwhen the Runnin ‘Bulldogs face Saint Francis at 12:00 PM and Toledo at 2:00 PM.
