Almost a month before the day he scored 32 points to lead the Cleveland High School boys’ basketball team in a frustrating loss to Collierville in the TSSAA Class AAA quarterfinals, Grant Hurst had something to celebrate.
Hurst, a senior, announced his college decision on Saturday afternoon via Twitter.
“I am proud to announce that I have made a commitment to advance my academic and athletic career at UT-Martin!” he wrote. “Thank you everyone for helping me make my dreams come true on and off the pitch. This is just the beginning!”
Hurst, a 6-foot-2 guard, helped the Blue Raiders in three Region 3 AAA championships and two state tournament appearancesand the program was 106-19 during its years in the field. He averaged 19 points, six rebounds and five assists per game last season. which ended with a 62-56 loss to Collierville.
The University of Tennessee at Martin finished the Ohio Valley Conference 8-16 and 6-14 in 2020-21. Ryan Ridder was introduced on April 7th as the 12th coach in Skyhawks history.
BASEBALL
Farragut 7, Walker Valley 6: Aiden Gibson and Preston Hodges had two of the Mustangs’ seven hits, and Ryan Lay scored in a narrow loss. Farragut scored six on the bottom of the fourth and escaped the trouble on the seventh after allowing Hodges to double an RBI without anyone dropping out.
McCallie 11, Brentwood Academy 1: Frankie Zahrobsky scored a grand slam in the first inning and the Blue Tornado broke out for 13 hits. Nolan Sergeant tripled and scored two runs, Kyle Berry hit base three times, and Hudson Calhoun and Grayson Smith each hit two hits and made two runs for McCallie. Smith beat seven batters in three scoreless innings for victory.
McCallie 10, Brentwood Academy 3: William Baker drove in four runs, and Frankie Zahrobsky had two doubles and went 3: 3 for the Blue Tornado (15: 2).
Heritage 13, Signal Mountain 3: After Signal Mountain scored two runs in the first round, Heritage pitcher JJ Hunt was suspended for allowing only two deserved runs in 5 2/3 innings while taking the win for the generals. CJ Robertson drove in three runs, and Caden Snyder doubled and drove with Brady Chandler in two runs. Dylan Bryant and Cade Kiniry each scored two goals and drove in the course of victory. Signal Mountain’s Braden Wolfard took a triple 3 against 3.
Silverdale Baptist 4, Soddy-Daisy 1: Turner Junkins had three hits and did not allow a deserved run in five innings for the Seahawks to take the final lead when Brett Rogers doubled in two runs in fifth as part of his 2-for-3 performance . Noah Ferguson went 1: 2 and scored for Soddy-Daisy.
Maryville 10, Walker Valley 0: The Rebels scored four runs each in the third and fourth innings. Trevor Wyllie had two of the Mustangs’ three hits.
Grace Academy 16, TCPS 2: Noah Bastian ran five runs for the Golden Eagles, and Colton Grace and Wesley Thompson had two hits and a pair of RBIs each. Thompson was also the winner, scoring six hits in three goalless innings.
SOFT BALL
Sequatchie County 9, Cleveland 0: Addy Edgmon scored two home runs, and Ella Edgmon and Megan Hall added one apiece for Sequatchie County, which has made 35 home runs in 25 games this season. Addy Edgmon leads the team with 12 homers and 57 RBIs. Ella Edgmon and Hall went 3-4 each with three RBIs against Cleveland, and Cali Green scored a four-goal.
GPS 17, Chattanooga Christian 3: The Bruisers scored 11 runs in fifth as Ansley Blevins (five RBIs) and Kennedy Moody completed consecutive home runs. Also homered for GPS, Bella Jenkins doubled up and drove in four runs when she and McKamey Bratcher got four hits each, while Maddie Grace Hubbard (3-for-4, triple) and Chapel Cunningham (2-for-4, two RBIs) also stood out. Hannah Blevins of Chattanooga Christian went 2-2 with two runs and an RBI double.
Hixson 16, Howard 0: Meghan Kernea doubled twice and scored three runs. Other standout Hixson players were Morgan Delashmitt (2-2, two RBIs, two runs), Jenna Griswold (three RBIs, two runs) and Ari Neal (three runs). Zoie Sullivan took the pitching win with eight strikeouts in three innings.
TENNIS
McCallie 7, University School of Jackson 0: Gabe Getz and Will Leathers won 8-0 in doubles, and the undefeated Blue Tornado (7-0) also received a clean single game from Andreas Sillaste and Colin Tuttle, who both won sets 6 -0 . Jeff Yu and the double tandem of Russell Fairman and Cole McNair only allowed one point each.
GPS 7, Science Hill 0; GPS 6, USJ 1: Olivia Scotchie fought back after a 6-3 defeat in the first set against Science Hill and won the next set 6-3 and then the tiebreaker. Chloe Nicola was also astute, scoring two dominant singles wins and winning her two doubles matches with Erin Ensign.
