Both the city’s water department and electricity department will share an integrated communications network. The technology upgrade will accurately measure water and electricity usage and quickly detect leaks or power outages in over 1.2 million residents in and around the Ohio capital.
“We want to provide our customers with real-time usage data so they can understand their water and electricity usage,” said Brian Haemmerle, deputy administrator for the city’s water department. “We will improve our service through real-time alerts. So if there is a problem we can fix it quickly or let the customer know that it needs to be fixed in the end.”
The Columbus Department of Public Utilities is deployed Stratus IQ ™ Electricity meters for private households, SmartPoint ® Radio modules for the new and existing water meters and the Sensus FlexNet ® communication network. The two-way FlexNet system provides secure, reliable real-time customer usage data from advanced meters and sensors over the FCC-licensed spectrum into the city.
“Our smart utility network will create greater operational efficiency and allow us to better focus on the details of our entire water distribution system,” said Haemmerle. “On the power side, we have the latest technology for power quality and outage management.”
The department will also launch the Sensus Customer portal Streamline customer communication. “We will give our customers the opportunity to decide whether to access their usage data – even in steps of an hour – before they receive their invoice,” said Haemmerle.
The 20-year partnership includes Managed Services and Software as a service (SaaS) solutions that enable Sensus to maintain and carry out software upgrades so that the utility company can focus on what it does best: providing clean drinking water and reliable electricity.
The first use of new measurement technologies is underway and the project should be completed within the next four years.
