Gardner-Webb Drops Pair To Saint Francis (Pa.) and Toledo Sunday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb dropped both ends of his Sunday twinbills at Brinkley Family Softball Stadium, losing 9-1 to Saint Francis, Pa. And 10-3 to Toledo.

GAME 1: Saint Francis (Pa.) 9, Gardner-Webb 1

The red flashes covered two runs up in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and put the game on hold with a seventh inning in five runs. The decisive seventh frame consisted of four singles, two of the runs with one out and three of the runs with two outs.

Gardner-Webb got a leadoff single from Jenna Wacaster at the end of the seventh, but couldn’t get past the second base.

The Runnin ‘Bulldogs had two hits in the game, with Wacaster (1-3) and Katie Mitchell (1-for-3, run) collect these.

Dreary Horrell took the loss in circles, worked 4.0 innings and allowed three runs with three hits and three walks. She fanned out two. Myers sheet came and threw the last three innings, allowing six runs with six hits with three strikeouts.

Saint Francis amassed nine hits in the game, led by Mekenzie Saban’s 4v5 day (three runs). Jordan Pietrzykoski added a pair of hits and two RBI. The visitors also took advantage of five walks.

GAME TWO: Toledo 10 Gardner-Webb 3

The Rockets scored seven runs in the lead of the first and never looked back in Sunday’s final. They used four walks, two hits, and two GWU errors to get an early advantage.

Andrea Lyon responded with a two-part home run at the end of the first, but neither team was able to scratch anything over the plate again by the top end of the fifth run – when Riley Mohr himself won a two-run home run for a 9-2 advantage.

A solo home run by Dayna Denner in sixth place gave Toledo a 10-2 lead, but Gardner-Webb kept the game alive by scoring a run on an infield single from in the bottom half Leslie McNeil. Trinity Sterrett took off sixth with his own, finished second due to a throwing error and took third place after a wild pitch.

Both teams went quietly in the seventh.

Myer took the loss to Gardner-Webb, who only worked the first inning, with seven inexperienced runs crossing the plate. Horrell came and was solid, allowing only two earned runs with nine hits in 6.0 innings.

Gardner-Webb had 11 hits in the game but nine runners stranded. Weslyn Almond went 2-for-4, Lyon finished with a 3-for-4 day and two RBIs, and McNeil went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Sterrett and Jenna Wacaster also had singles.

Toledo did this too and got two pieces from Aleah Marra, Mohr and Raquel Emery.

McKenna Schmidt worked with 5.0 innings and only allowed two runs with seven hits and six strikeouts.

Gardner-Webb will travel to Columbia on Tuesday March 16 to play South Carolina in Columbia. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m. GWU returns home March 20-21 to face Longwood in Big South.
