CLEVELAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Cleveland State’s third NCAA appearance is coming weekend against the second seed, the Houston Cougars.

The Vikings have history on their side as they didn’t lose a game in the first round of the tournament. In 1986, Kevin Mackey’s Viking bunch reached the regional semifinals before falling to the Naval Academy under the direction of David Robinson (71-70).

Warren JFK grad Jason Kokrak finished third in a row in the top ten

Cleveland State defeated third-occupied Indiana (83-79) in the opening round of the 1986 tournament. 23 years later (2009) the CSU returned to the tournament, where they defeated the Wake Forest (84-69) with the fourth seed in the first round.

… Cleveland State was down 10 at halftime (40-30) and beat YSU in the second half (51-34) to get past the Penguins (81-74). Tre Gomillion scored 23 points when he went off the floor 11 for 12. Torrey Patton also had 19 points. Garrett Covington finished with 24 points for the penguins. Covington linked on 3 out of 5 from three point country.

December 26 – Vikings, 87-69
… Cleveland State shot 55.4% off the ground when they topped Penguins 87-69 the day after Christmas. Three players posted double-digit results as Torrey Patton took the lead on 17 points. D’Moi Hodge and Chris Greene scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. For YSU, Shermar Rathan-Mayes received 17 points, a strong team award.
