Tigers will activate Jose Ureña to start out Sunday; rookie infielder optioned to Toledo

The Detroit Tigers will activate right-handed pitcher Jose Ureña from the 10-day injury list to start Sunday’s series finals against the Chicago White Sox.

To make way for Ureña, the Tigers chose infielder Zack Short for Triple-A Toledo after Saturday’s game.

As planned, Ureña will only miss a start after experiencing discomfort in his lower forearm near his wrist on May 26.

Ureña, 29, signed on as a free agent over the winter. He’s 2-4 with a 4.14 ERA ERA in 54 1/3 innings, goes 22 and hits 35.

Short, 26, was called back on May 29 to take Ureña’s place on the roster. He’s 3-for-11 with five walks in two stints with the Tigers this year.

The Tigers might have another move on the horizon. Right-handed Michael Fulmer has not served since May 30 while battling what manager AJ Hinch has described as arm fatigue.

Hinch said on Saturday that a trip to the injured list could be an option.

“We have to consider moving there,” said Hinch. “It has been a long time and the tiredness has not gone away.”
