DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have optionally chosen the right-handed pitcher Beau Burrows after Triple-A Toledo Saturday’s 15-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
It was a long afternoon for Burrows, throwing 50 pitches in 1 2/3 innings of work before leaving after getting sick on the hill in the hot afternoon sun.
Burrows withdrew the White Sox in turn in the fourth inning but got stuck in a long fifth inning that eventually resulted in five runs.
After giving up on four baserunners, Burrows knocked out back-to-back batters before feeling the effects of the heat and illness. Sox batter Yermin Mercedes noticed and signaled the Tigers’ dugout that the pitcher needed help just as Burrows turned to throw up on the back of the hill.
“I think he might have thrown up a few times,” said Tigers manager AJ Hinch. “I didn’t stay on the hill long enough to see it. He said he felt sick, a little light-headed. We got him out immediately. He threw many pitches in this inning. “
Burrows, 24, was the Tigers’ first-round draft pick in 2015 (22nd overall) from Weatherford, Texas High School. He made his major league debut in 2020, with an ERA of 5.40 in 6 2/3 innings.
This was his first appearance in 2021.
The Tigers will take an appropriate step to add another arm ahead of Sunday’s game. The only available pitcher on the 40-man roster is potential Matt Manning, who last pitched on Wednesday and is unlikely to receive the call to make his Major League debut in a short break.
The Tigers have the flexibility to select a pitcher from Toledo who is not currently on the 40-man roster. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario has returned from funeral leave in the Dominican Republic but has been added to the COVID-related injury list while completing COVID-related logs, which means he is temporarily excluded from the 40-man list.
It is also likely that the Tigers will be able to transfer pitcher Rony Garcia to the 60-day injured list and remove him from the 40-man roster if necessary. Hinch said Garcia is likely to have knee surgery, although he is currently seeking a second opinion.
