Women Helping Encouraging Women, a nonprofit, provides lawyers and programs to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.

Local organizations are making a fuss this summer to fight domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

WHEW stands for Women Helping Encouraging Women and wants to draw attention to these crimes.

Founder Rochelle Morrishaw notes that there is an increasing need for victims of domestic violence and abuse as a result of pandemics.

“There have been more calls in 2020 than any other year since we became an organization,” said Morrishaw.

Morishaw wanted to become a police officer after graduating from criminal justice. However, being a domestic violence survivor herself, she realizes that she needs to do more to help others.

“Anything we needed as survivors back then was more important than having a badge and a cruiser to become someone else on the road,” Morishaw said.

She currently leads a self-help group and works to help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, rape and child abuse.

“It doesn’t matter where they are, whether they’re in court and need us with us, or those who have just been raped and need to go to the emergency room,” Morishaw said.

The group works with teenagers on their Teens Inspiring Kids program. It was started by Morishaw’s children who say they often don’t take their children seriously because they are young.

“I’ve learned that peers prefer to talk freely with their peers,” says Jahquan Chambers.

The two groups will be out every Sunday this summer to raise awareness.

“We need to come together to find ways to prevent this and teach people signs, warning signs and who to report to,” Morishaw said. “I understand that some people are afraid to call 911. As a trustworthy neighbor, it is very important for us to continue to do so. “

They also have other summer partnerships starting next month including a partnership with Toledo Public Schools.
