Some of the Midwest’s best youth tennis players will be in Columbus this weekend for the USTA Midwest Open Girls 18 Championships.
The tournament will take place Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at Columbus North High School and Donner Park. The 18-year-old group will consist of 64 singles and 32 doubles teams.
The single games start every morning at 8 a.m., while the double games are mainly played in the afternoon and early evening.
Ashlie Wilson, a new senior from the north who recently signed on to Purdue, is number 3 in the singles. She will play doubles with the number 1 singles, Natalie Stasny from Woodridge, Illinois.
Another Columbus resident, Japneet Kaur, is added to the 14-year-old girl category.
Kendal Hammel, tennis coach for the north boys and girls, is in his 29th year as tournament director.
“It has gone through a lot of changes,” said Hammel. “It used to be a national tournament with 128 players in the main field. A few years ago they changed things so much that they tried to keep things local with travel and everything. “
Meanwhile, North will also host the Columbus City tennis tournament from July 30th to August 3rd.
The closing date for the men’s, women’s and mixed classes is Monday 1 p.m. The cost is $ 22 for a single player and $ 15 per player for a team of two. The final will take place on August 3rd.
The deadline for submissions for the junior and youth classes, which will be held on July 30th, is Monday 5:59 p.m. The cost is $ 24 for juniors (11-18 years old) and $ 20 for teenagers (up to 10 years old).
