This charming family business can easily be overlooked, but connoisseurs consider it a well-kept secret in the glass city.

TOLEDO, Ohio – A small, nondescript building in the back corner of one of Monroe Street’s many business complexes is one of the best Thai restaurants the 419 has to offer.

Rose Thai is quaint, but the meals are anything but.

The light but creamy Gaeng Kheaw Waan is a pampering green curry that goes best with a healthy serving of shrimp. With a hint of basil and a bunch of eggplant and peppers, it’s perfectly pampering yet refreshing.

The best part is that you can control the seasoning content so any dish can be modified to best suit your taste buds.

Pad Thai is a fan favorite and Rose Thai does it well. The heaping serving of rice noodles – also for lunch – is coated with a thin nutty sauce, crispy bean sprouts and of course crispy, crumbled peanuts. A light squeeze of a hot lime enhances all the wonderful flavors of the classic dish.

If you’re looking for something out of the norm, end your meal with the banana dumplings. The refreshing pleasure is beautifully coated on fresh banana leaves. It’s a dessert that is reminiscent of a homemade toffee, but is much less sticky (to everyone’s delight) but retains that sweet and summery taste.

This charming family business can easily be overlooked, but connoisseurs consider it a well-kept secret in the glass city.

Even if it’s just about trying a sip of the sweet but robust Thai iced coffee on a hot summer day, it’s worth throwing your head in, grabbing a menu and saying hello.
