COLUMBUS, Ohio – It’s an anniversary nobody wants to relive, but this anniversary is a reminder of the courage of law enforcement officers.

Monday marks five years since the death of Columbus police officer Steve Smith.

He died on April 12, 2016, two days after he was shot and killed during a Clintonville standoff.

Smith was part of the SWAT unit that issued an arrest warrant for Lincoln Rutledge.

After a few hours, Rutledge fired several shots, one of which hit Smith.

Law enforcement agencies from across the country attended his funeral to honor him.

“He loved his job, but he also loved his family,” said his wife Lisa in 2017.

Officer Smith’s name will forever be remembered and displayed on the Columbus Police Memorial.

Rutledge is in jail serving a life sentence.
