The FlashCell load cells weigh food products at speeds of up to 800 parts per minute (ppm) with a better precision than required by the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID). With three different load cell types in the FlashCell portfolio, food manufacturers can choose the right load cell for their products and weigh a complete range of products up to 10 kg reliably and precisely.
Users of the Mettler-Toledo C-Series checkweighers can now process products faster and reduce product losses through greater weighing precision. The company said manufacturers will also benefit from smaller checkweighing system footprint in limited factory space.
Mettler-Toledo has carried out tests comparing the new FlashCell with current EMFR (Electromagnetic Force Restoration) load cells and installed its new load cell technology at customers’ sites. Through these tests and installations, the company demonstrated that its FlashCell load cell checkweighers could, for example, achieve throughputs of up to 800 ppm and a 40% improvement in standard deviation, all within the MID limits for a 35 g granola bar.

Mettler-Toledo FlashCell load cell technology performance improvements include higher throughputs. Next-generation load cell technology supports shorter measurement times and enables product throughput of up to 800 ppm without compromising weighing accuracy or operating performance. C-Series checkweighers with FlashCell technology therefore contribute to increased productivity, said Mettler-Toledo.
Improvements also ensure higher precision: The FlashCell technology delivers weighing results with a standard deviation that is up to four times lower than the previous generation of load cells. This helps avoid overcrowding and costly product giving away. Even with higher throughputs, regulatory requirements such as the EU MID can be complied with.
FlashCell works with shorter measurement times at high speeds. The weigh belt can therefore be reduced in length, with slower belt speeds increasing the stability of product handling and allowing shorter outfeed belts and product collection areas. The total length of the checkweigher itself can be reduced by up to 24%.
