Mason hires Nate Baer as boys soccer coach from Toledo Ottawa Hills HS


MASON – Mason High School has announced that Nate Baer will be their next soccer head coach pending board approval. During eight seasons at Ottawa Hills High School in Toledo, Baer led the Green Bears to an overall record of 112-34-6 (58-2 Toledo Area Athletic Conference) as head coach.

Baer succeeds Mike Combs, who was 43-9-4 with Mason and led the Comets to three consecutive Greater Miami Conference titles, the 2020 District Championship (16-1-1) and a No. 2 in the past DI soccer coaches 2020 survey. Combs resigned for personal reasons End of January.

Baer has achieved several high profile coaching performances in his career. He received the highest honor a high school soccer coach can receive for Coach of the Year 2019 from the National Federation of State High Schools. The NFHS award resulted from Baer being named Ohio Football Coach of the Year 2018 by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Under his leadership, his 2017 Green Bears team had a 20-1-2 record and a trip to the D-III State Finals, where they lost 1-0 to Summit Country Day.

Last season, Ottawa Hills won the Toledo Area Athletic Conference and the 2020 regional title for the 15th consecutive year before falling 1-0 to Cardinal Mooney in the DIII semifinals.

Trainer Bär was named TAAC Trainer of the Year of the League from 2013 to 2020 and was also named D-III OSSCA Trainer of the Year 2018. His coaching credentials include the USSF National E-License, USSF National D-License, Futsal Certification and TOVO Methodology Coursework.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Lake Erie College (2010) where he headed the soccer team for two years. Nate works as a data analytics engineer. He will be moving to the Mason area with his wife Samantha and their four daughters (Quinn, Brinnly, Rian and Logan) in the near future.
