Columbus Zoo says the baby’s mother died just three days later from complications in childbirth, and so she is being hand-raised.
POWELL, Ohio – Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced the newest addition to its Heart of Africa region on Monday.
Baby Thomson’s gazelle, who zoo officials said was a girl, was born in early May. According to a Facebook post from the zoo, the baby’s mother died of childbirth complications just three days later.
Despite this sad news, zoo officials say the fawn is healthy and is currently hand-reared by members of the animal care team.
Since the gazelles are herd animals, the fawn always stays with a small group of other Thomson gazelles and will be officially introduced to the savannah next spring.
