The attempted changes to the structure of the club in the past week met with fierce opposition, which ultimately led to a re-examination of the ownership structure

Just a week after the club announced it would be removing “Crew” from much of its branding, Columbus co-owner Dr. Pete Edwards told MLS supporters in a video posted on social media Monday night that “we’re going to be the Columbus Crew forever.”

The organization is now returning to its original name, adding “Crew” back to a reformatted crest. It will also add “96” within the outline of the Ohio State flag to indicate its status as a founding member of the MLS.

It was a difficult start to the 2021 campaign for Columbus. The off-field branding controversy sparked unwanted fighting, while the Eastern Conference got off to a shaky 11th place in five games.

What was said

The Columbus crew made two statements on social media on Monday evening, noting their change of direction. One of the statements was made on video by Edwards and co-owner Dee Haslam.

They were the culmination of meeting fans over the past week.

“The importance of keeping the crew as the main identifier of the club was clear,” said the written statement. “The decision that emerged from the discussion was that Columbus Crew will remain the team’s official name in the future.

“The crew received Nordeckes’ endorsement for the name, which will include the Columbus Crew as part of the new badge. Also, ’96’ will be added to the outline of the Ohio state flag to recognize the club’s founding status in Major League Soccer . “

How did Columbus fans react?

In response to the announcement, fans presented a mix of emotions on social media. The majority were generally happy to see the regression, and some hoped a revamped coat of arms would be closer to its traditional appearance.

I’m not against changing the badge, after all, they saved our team and brought us a new stadium and championship. But you can never take Crew out of the name
