COLUMBUS, miss. (WTVA) – Columbus Mayor Robert Smith is back in the public eye after being hospitalized earlier this year.
On Thursday, he and the police announced their plan to reduce gun violence in the city.
“I need to be up front and show leadership,” Smith said Thursday, “and let people know that even though I was sick, I am just happy and delighted to be back and have the opportunity to deal with it.” Situation and hope we can get it under control. “
Smith released a statement last month that he was working from home and waiting for doctors to evacuate him.
The mayor appeared briefly a few weeks ago at the opening of a new fire station. His doctors told him to take it easy.
Smith was elected to the position in 2006. In the general election on June 8th, he faces two opponents.
