Columbus, Ind. – A CPD officer shot dead a dog Friday afternoon that attacked and injured a woman outside a house in Columbus. At around 12:45 p.m., CPD officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Pear Street regarding a report of a woman assaulted by two dogs.
When the police arrived in the area of the residence, they watched two people climb onto the back of a nearby truck to escape the dogs that were still running in the area. The officers also learned that the injured victim got into their vehicle to escape the dogs. The officers were initially unable to approach the victim because the aggressive dogs were nearby and had their vehicle a short distance back to a nearby ambulance.
The victim told officials that she was the landlady of the apartment where the attack took place and was unaware that the tenant had the two dogs described as a pit bull mix. When the landlord opened the gate to the back yard, the dogs reportedly pushed their way out of the fence, attacked them and brought them to the ground. The woman had several significant dog bites, including two on the neck, and was rushed to Columbus Regional Hospital.
CPD officials and Columbus Animal Care Services found one of the dogs in the back yard of the residence and were able to secure it. The second dog was located a short time later and attempted to attack the Columbus Animal Care Service agent who tried to hold him back. A CPD officer then fired his gun once to stop the attack. The injured dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment.
