American Athletic Tournament First Round

HOUSTON – The University of Houston women’s basketball experienced a seven-game winning streak against Cincinnati with a 65:57 loss at the Fertitta Center on Tuesday.
Laila Blair led the Cougars with 19 points, which was their career high. Blair went 3-of-4 off the charity strip and had a team high of four assists and four steals. Tatyana Hill had an almost double double, leading the Cougars on the glass with nine rebounds in addition to 11 points
Houston got off to a sluggish start when Cincinnati shot early and took a 10-7 lead on the first media timeout. A strong defensive kept the Cougars close as the held Cincinnati went goalless for over four minutes and ranged from 10-14 by the end of the first quarter.
UH played its signature style of defense during the second quarter to try to reduce the deficit it faced. Blair and Hill together scored 13 of the Cougars 15 points in the second quarter. Hill tied things 20-20 after stealing the ball and converting it into two points. Blair landed three steals in the second quarter to keep the Cougars on the defensive when Houston was halfway down 26:31.
The Cougars continued to fight when they broke off at the top of Cincinnati. Empty possessions plagued UH, the team still managing to beat the Bearcats 7-5 before a timeout was called. Houston struggled, refused to allow simple baskets from the Bearcats, and set off from afar. When the time ran out, the ball was in Blair’s hands, and she went to Onyeje to put a three-pointer on the buzzer to tie the thing at 45:45 as both teams headed into the fourth quarter.
Early sales plagued the Cougars in the last frame in addition to misses. UH shot 27.8 percent off the field to 55.6 percent of Cincinnati in the fourth quarter and eventually fell to Cincinnati in the regular season finale.
