LAST GAME

Senior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) had a double-doubles and recorded her 1,000th career point when the Pirates turned Providence (67-55) upside down at Walsh Gym on Saturday.

Seton Hall was only 3:48 behind during the game and took control with a 12-2 run that began late in the first quarter. Pirate’s lead reached 23 points in the third quarter, and despite a long Providence run in the fourth quarter, their edge was never reduced to single digits.

Elmore broke out for game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds for their third double-double in their last four games. She also had four assists and two steals in another good all-round performance. Elmore’s 1,000 points include 55 while playing for Syracuse as a freshman. She currently only needs 49 points to be the 23rd player to achieve 1,000 points in a pirate uniform.

Three other pirates also posted double-digit results. Sophomore Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) had 14 points on the strength of three made three-pointers. Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, NY) still had 13 points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals Lauren Park Lane (Wilmington, Del.) had 10 points and the team’s top five assists.

graduate Andra Espinoza-Hunter The Seton Hall women’s basketball team scored an 85:59 win over Xavier on Saturday, making it their fifth straight win.

The Pirates were only 16 seconds behind at the start of the game and led the Musketeers 6-2 in the BIG EAST conference for the first time since the 2014/15 season in a “foul-fest”.

Espinoza-Hunter had the best 28 points of the game in 10v20 shooting, including four three-points. Senior Desiree Elmore and the second year Mya Jackson added 13 points each.

SCOUTING XAVIER

The Musketeers have had a terrible 3:27 season overall and a 2:16 mark in the BIG EAST game. Their victories came in the opener against Utah on January 10th in Georgetown and on February 21st at home against Providence.

This year, according to the preseason coaches survey, Xavier is expected to take ninth place in the BIG EAST conference with 11 teams. A’riana Gray has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.

The Musketeers had a hard time navigating the 2020-21 COVID-19 shortened schedule. To date, Xavier has played eight BIG EAST games at Conference Lows and checked in with a 1-7 record. The Musketeers defeated Providence on New Years Eve but have not won since then and abandoned their last five competitions, including a game against the Pirates at Walsh Gym on January 23.

Most recently, Xavier fell at Butler (73-61) on Monday. A’riana Gray led the team with 23 points and eight rebounds.
