CLEVELAND, Ohio – Pitching coach Carl Willis said Aaron Civale has begun moving from the rehab phase of his recovery to the competitive phase.
Civale played 4 1/3 scoreless innings for Class A Lake County in his second rehab start on Friday night. He knocked out four, went one, and threw 59 throws, 75 percent (44-for-59) for punches.
“Aaron was really good on Friday night,” said Willis. “He threw 4 1/3 innings, he was up to 92 mph, so his speed is increasing. We’ll see how he gets in on recovery today but have a really good night to him on the hill
“By talking to Joe Torres (Indians Minor League pitching coordinator) he begins to get back into the competitive mindset as opposed to – I’m not saying it’s a rehab – but there is Lot of things that include rehab in terms of feeling like feeling your delivery and getting your pitches back. I think he was at a point last night where he was really able to go out and show himself off and compete and put some of these other things aside.
Civale, who has recovered from a strained right middle finger, has not played a major league game since June 21.
Shane Bieber, who hasn’t pitched since June 13th, threw another bullpen session on Friday.
“He had an up-down bullpen (which simulated two innings) and threw 36 pitches,” said Willis. “He will leave the hill again on Tuesday and we will consider what his next step will be. He keeps making progress. “
Bieber is recovering from a pulled muscle in his right rotator cuff.
No. 1: Keep your head up
The Indians told right-hander James Karinchak that he was given an option for the AAA Columbus class after Friday’s 3-3 loss to the Red Sox. Karinchak allowed Jonathan Arauz a triple homer in the eighth inning to pocket the loss.

“There were two things that stood out,” said Willis. “No. 1, he was running a fast pace. He got the ball, climbed the hill and hit. His delivery was a little faster.”
Willis said the second thing that impressed him was how Allen got out of trouble in the fifth inning. He beat Alex Verdugo to start the inning and wildly tossed him into second place. Choosing a field player brought runners without an out into the corners and the Indians led 2-0.
“So he got first and third place with no outs and things really could have derailed,” said Willis. “But he got the double game and minimized the damage. I thought that showed a big step forward in his maturity and serenity and his confidence in himself. “
