CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The Cleveland Housing Network, along with several volunteer organizations and the Cleveland Police Department, spent Friday afternoons in Detroit-Shoreway doing a community cleanup.
They focused on beautifying the area by mowing grass on vacant lots, cleaning up vacant houses and refurbishing homes.
“It shows that they are not afraid to be here. People talk about our street being that bad, but they see it’s not as bad as they say, ”said Rochelle Malcolm, who lives on Elton Avenue near the intersection of West 73rd Street.
One of the main goals of the event is to build stronger relationships between the police force and the people they serve.
“It creates a relationship that doesn’t exist,” said Patrick Kenney, CHN’s chief operating officer. “It’s a way of giving back to the community and creating high quality engagement between people who have an interest in that community.”
Kenney said more events are planned across the region.
Over the past 40 years, CHN has developed 7,000 new homes for low-income families.
