A man allegedly dating a 13-year-old just before the child was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer pleaded not guilty to a variety of charges on Wednesday.
Defense attorney Michael Oppenheimer stepped not guilty during a hearing before Cook County Circuit Judge Charles Burns Ruben Romans in the name of.
Roman, 21, was charged in May with triple gun use and once for ruthless firing of a firearm. It does not include a child endangerment charge against Roman when he was arrested.
The child endangerment charges were dropped after the Cook County State Attorney’s Office ruled incorrect information was entered in the court record of the shooting by a prosecutor.
Surveillance video published by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability show Roman shooting at a passing vehicle while on the morning of March 29th Adam Toledo stood next to him.
Prosecutors say Roman fled the area with Toledo shortly afterwards, and officers followed her down an alley. Roman was arrested first. Toledo kept running, video of the filming.
Roman is released on an ankle monitor pending after a charitable bond fund deposited $ 40,000 on bail and claimed the city used him as a “scapegoat” for Toledo’s murder.
Mostly peaceful demonstrations were held for days after the video of Toledo’s shooting was released by the agency investigating the Chicago police shootings on Thursday. Participants criticized the Chicago Police Department for a long history of wrongdoing, particularly in black and Latino neighborhoods, and called for justice for Adam, who was Latino.
