CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The 42-year-old man accused of beating two Cleveland police officers while trying to escape from a McDonald’s parking lot stands before a judge Wednesday morning.
Shannony Wayne Halstead has been charged with criminal assault, non-compliance, obstruction of official business, trafficking, drug possession, possession of fines and improper use of firearms in a vehicle.
The incident occurred on August 10 at McDonald’s at 5610 Memphis Avenue.
Officials were stopped by the manager of McDonald’s because of an unconscious man in a car.
The officers, along with ambulance services, approached the moving vehicle and attempted to speak to the man who was later identified as Halstead. The suspect woke up, put the car into gear, and drove back and forth. The officers told him to stop. Halstead then hit two officers with the vehicle and, according to the report, fled the scene.
Halstead was arrested after a chase in the area of W. 66th Street and Denison Avenue. Witnesses reported on 19 News that the man sped down Denison Avenue and crashed into a man’s truck before it was destroyed.
A third officer was injured during the arrest.
Local police told 19 News that two loaded guns and heroin had been recovered from the vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.
