RAINIER, Wash – The 2B track season got off to a quick start on Thursday. Many local athletes took off their shoulder pads, knee pads and shin guards and replaced them at short notice with running spikes and various throwing devices such as Toledo. Kalama and Adna all met for a meeting in Rainier, Washington.
For Kalama, Melanie Martinez was the highlight on the girls’ side over short distances. Just a week after scoring two goals in the Chinooks district’s final soccer win against Onalaska, the senior won the 100 meters in 13.64, won the 200 meters in 28.85, dropped anchor in the Chinooks 4×100 win and took the third leg for their winning 4×200 team.
She was joined by several teammates from the district football team, including Junior Kailey Shipley, who finished second in the 100-meter run and was part of both victorious relay teams.
In the girls’ jumps, fellow footballer Ruby Jackson won the long jump with a 14-foot, 9-inch jump, along with the triple jump at 31-foot, 2-inch.
On the boy’s side, Kalama was led by Max Cox, who went from catching passes for the soccer team to throwing for the track, winning the javelin with a throw of 157 feet (5 inches). He also finished second in the discus at 101 feet, 11 inches, although he and the rest of the field were more than 20 meters behind defending state champion Jeremiah Nubbe, who threw the competition with a 183 feet, 8 inches.
