Isaac Paredes recalled from Toledo, Jeimer Candelario on bereavement record

The Detroit Tigers have called back infielder Isaac Paredes of Triple-A Toledo and put Jeimer Candelario on the mourning list. Usually these are very short term assignments so we wish Candelario and his loved ones all the best and expect to see him again shortly. In the meantime, Tigers fans will take another look at one of their top positional prospects.

Paredes is only 22 years old, but after rising rapidly as a teenager, his progress has flattened out over the past few seasons. At each level, we’ve seen a combination of disk discipline, low strikeout rates, and lots of balls in play. The problem is still the lack of strength in his stroke and that has unfortunately not changed this season.

Paredes holds his usual excellent strikeout-to-walk rate for the Toledo Mud Hens this year, checking in at 13.6, respectively. He has two home runs and a total of six additional base hits in 125 record appearances. He’s also played every position on the infield at some point, with most of the reps coming at 3B and 2B as you’d expect.

For example, he only showed his splits on the first base just last week, as you’ll see in the following clip. He remains a safe, well-armed defender in the infield, albeit with a limited range. Overall, he continues to profile himself like a player who can deliver some good at-bats to the Tigers in time, but the ongoing lack of strength and speed makes it difficult to draw that profile as a regular game at the power positions around the infield great team. He continues to put the ball on the pull side far too often to hit for the kind of force the Tigers need to see in an everyday third or second baseman.

In the short term, however, Candelario did not deliver much performance this year despite solid production. Paredes should be able to give the Tigers similar results for some games while getting the chance to work with the coaching staff.

The Tigers also had an update on the Spencer Turnbull front today. Fortunately, it doesn’t sound like he has a major injury and should be back in rotation anytime soon. With a low history of shoulder problems in his past, this is particularly good news.

In another step, the Tigers have also promoted outfielder Jacob Robson to Triple-A Toledo. Due to poor performance, he remains in third place in the depth table of the club of fast outfielder and does not have a 40-man squad. However, while manager AJ Hinch continues to rummage through the various outfield options, it’s not impossible that Robson could eventually earn a cup of coffee despite being stuck in line behind guys like Derek Hill, Daz Cameron and Victor Reyes.
