COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Curry dipped in butter, fried with teriyaki or embedded in rhubarb pie? These are some of the ways you can eat cicadas from Brood X, says a savage artisan and gatherer from Columbus.
Wild artisans, knowing what to harvest and what to avoid when out in nature, come up with recipes to try Brut X. Simon La Bozetta, who learned to forage from his mother, says he hasn’t eaten a cicada, but he heard that they were a delicacy.
“I heard they were called lobsters, I heard they were called a type of popcorn,” said La Bozetta. “I’ve heard they are called hillbilly chickens, so they go by different names depending on the region.

“And since I’ve done some research, I’ve found different recipes with different titles. Maybe we’ll try one of these recipes and I’ll find something old and timely and we’ll try something like that. Maybe something more modern or as simple as dipping in butter like lobster. “
La Bozetta is an experienced collector and harvests dandelions, wild chives, ramps, cattails and white pine needles for tea – among many other plants and herbs. He’s been looking for recipes to prepare for the making of Brood X.

“People cook them a number of different ways, from roasting to stirring to making rhubarb pie with these little guys … It turns out there are historical recipes for [cicadas]. I heard they taste like nutty, I heard they taste like chicken or shrimp, ”said La Bozetta. “I imagine it must have something to do with the preparation – maybe they are very good with curry or with teriyaki sauce, I don’t know. I’ll find out this year! ”

“I would warn any body to do it slowly. It can be very dangerous depending on what you are collecting. Lots of people enjoy collecting wild mushrooms, various types of mushrooms, and while it’s very fun and very rewarding – this is the time of year morels come in season, and this is a popular mushroom – but there are some lookalikes and sometimes it can be very dangerous sometimes it can cause you serious gastrointestinal problems.

“I would advise anyone interested in attending or learning more about foraging to learn one thing at a time, learn them very well, and learn how to responsibly collect that particular strain.”
