When you think of spend the 4th weekend of July outdoors, you may want to create some backup plans.

Rain remains possible throughout the week, especially in the afternoons and evenings. But an approaching cold front is likely to bring a few inches of rain to the Columbus area over the weekend, said Matt Sena, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Peachtree City Office. Showers and thunderstorms are most likely on Friday and Saturday.

“It looks like we have a cold front into northern Georgia on Friday and that is unfortunately pushing into central Georgia by Saturday, which concentrates the better chance of rain in the Columbus area on Saturday,” he said.

It is possible that the front will be south of Columbus on Sunday, but it is more likely that the front will stall. Until Sunday, the chances for showers and thunderstorms are still “pretty good,” said Sena.

“Make sure you make some alternative plans to celebrate the July 4th weekend indoors as the odds of rain are pretty good,” he said. “Do not rely on being able to enjoy outdoor activities, especially in the afternoons and evenings.”
