RISON – Floods washed a car off a freeway in east Cleveland County Tuesday morning, while some freeways were temporarily closed on Monday and Tuesday due to flooding due to prolonged heavy rainfall.
Cleveland County’s assistant sheriff division chief Trey Gerard and other volunteers helped rescue a Woodlawn couple after their car was swept off the highway. 114 on the Cleveland-Lincoln County Line.
Sherry Kimbrell said she and her husband Jerry were driving to Star City for a doctor’s appointment when they got to part of the highway. 114 on the Cleveland / Lincoln County Line, which was covered in water. She said the water didn’t seem too deep, but when she passed through the current was strong enough to knock the car off the road.
She said she honked the horn to alert a man who was nearby to help them. Eventually, other volunteers came to help before Deputy Gerard and two others could pull her out of the flooded car.
Stephen McClellan, coordinator for the Cleveland County Office of Emergency Management, said he had been informed that parts of the highway were being removed. 63, Highway. 54 and Highway. 114 in eastern Cleveland County were temporarily closed due to flooding on Tuesday morning.
McClellan also reported that several county roads were flooded Tuesday morning while several county roads, including both paved and gravel roads, were damaged by washouts from the flood.
