After working in Columbus for 40 years, Ned Pettus Jr. became director of public safety. Is retired.
Columbus, Ohio – After 40 years working in Columbus, Ned Pettus Jr., director of public safety, retired Wednesday.
Petas announced his resignation in July.
Pettus spent 35 years with the Columbus Fire Department. He rose to the top and became the city’s first African-American fire chief in 2002.
On August 1, 2016, Mayor Andrew Ginther appointed Petas as director of public safety.
In the five years since, Petas has overseen several changes in public safety, including carrying cameras for Columbus police officers and installing ShotSpotter shot detection systems in four Columbus counties.
“Director Petas has led our efforts to strengthen and improve the city’s key services,” Ginther said in July. “He has implemented changes and reforms, resulting in a security force that better reflects and serves our community. We thank him for his leadership and his decades of commitment. “
Petas graduated from Linden McKinley High School with a bachelor’s, two master’s and one PhD degrees. He received his PhD in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate University in California.
