COLUMBUS, miss. (WCBI) – On Tuesday morning, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs expressed his optimism about the growing number of Mississippi residents who are finally getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
They administered more than 81,000 shots between August 15 and 27, according to the Mississippi Department of Health. They say nearly 53,000 of these shots were first cans.
In Mississippi, vaccinations have risen for the past six straight weeks. Pharmacist Kin Seto saw the same thing in the family pharmacy in Columbus. He told WCBI that vaccinations had increased 60 percent in the past three weeks.
“The biggest reason (for the increase) right now is that the number of cases and also the number of deaths has risen sharply,” says Seto. “And if you follow the obituaries, we see a lot of people in their thirties and forties who have just died of COVID.”
The health department reports that around 1.1 million Mississippi supporters are now fully vaccinated, about 38 percent of the population. Nearly 46 percent of Mississippi residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to MSDH.
