YOUNGSTOWN – Seventh and eighth grade athletics returns to the Youngstown City School District this year, bringing a long history of sports back to life.
YCSD is reconfiguring this fall and two middle schools, East Middle School on P. Ross Berry Campus and Chaney Middle School on McGuffey Campus, are entering the county landscape.
“East Middle School will be a feeder school for East High and Chaney Middle School will be the feeder school for Chaney High,” said CEO Justin Jennings in a press release. “We believe our reconfiguration will better serve the academic needs of our fellows, but our athletics will benefit too. It will help build these programs, shape these players, and build these teams from a younger age. “

This year, both middle schools are offering teams for the seventh and eighth graders. This is a prospective year for the county middle schools through the Ohio High School Athletic Association, whose plans are expected to be fully approved by the association the following year.
YCSD Middle School Sports Director Nick Sferra looks forward to the success of the program.
“Sanctioning sport at the middle school level will enable consistent planning with other schools in the region to continue providing our student athletes with play facilities,” he said. “As always, all trainers must have an active student activity permit and other evidence.”
