CLEVELAND COUNTY, Oklahoma (KFOR) – The Oklahoma State Department of Health has reported a confirmed outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta variant ripped through a gym in Cleveland County. The department said of the 47 confirmed cases, 21 were of the Delta variant.

“From what we now know about the Delta variant, we were actually very lucky that no more people were infected,” said state epidemiologist Jolianne Stone.
OSDH officials said the first cases of the outbreak surfaced between April 15 and May 3, 2021.

“We know that this particular virus, especially when you breathe out or breathe heavily, makes those kinds of things make more viruses,” said Stone.
The health department said a total of 47 cases were related to the outbreak, affecting people aged 5 to 58 years.

85 percent of them were too young to get the vaccine at the time.
“Remember, this was around the time the FDA was expanding the use of Pfizer vaccines to allow children ages 12 and older to be vaccinated,” the epidemiologist said.

Three of these cases had received at least one dose of the vaccine. Another four were fully vaccinated.
“Probably this could happen again, especially with what we know about the variant,” said Stone.

Of all 47 cases, two ended up in the hospital and one in the intensive care unit.
“The biggest thing we can do to prevent this from happening again is vaccination,” she said.

According to OSDH, this shows how quickly the virus can spread indoors. The department urges parents to get their young athletes’ shots before sending them to summer sports camps.
“If everyone on your sports team is vaccinated, it is unlikely to spread,” Stone said.

The CDC continues to recommend anyone over the age of 12 to get vaccinated.
To date, more than 37,000 children between the ages of 12 and 17 in Oklahoma have been fully vaccinated. That’s almost 3,000 more than a week ago.
