CLEVELAND, Ohio — Fish Frys are a Greater Cleveland Lenten tradition, with dozens of churches and non-profit organizations and clubs making meatless Fridays something to look forward to. But if you’re looking to switch things up, don’t feel like waiting in line or perhaps crave something a little fancier than the standard fish ‘n chips, many area restaurants are serving up fish fry specials of their own, too.

Cleats
The Friday fish fry at the old Gray Wolf in Cleveland was legendary. The tavern closed a while back, but this sports bar in North Olmsted has kept the tradition alive. The Grey Wolf Fish Fry ($10.99) features an 8-ounce piece of cod that is soaked in a special brine and then coated in a secret recipe breading. The meal comes with scratch-made coleslaw and french fries. Cleats was voted “Best Fish Fry Restaurant” by cleveland.com readers back in 2016.

Spice up your Fish Fryday tradition by putting a modern Mexican spin on it. This Lakewood spot’s Latino Fish Fry ($14) features Dos Equis beer-battered perch, fries topped with jalapeno chimichurri and queso fresco, a corn masa hushpuppy and chipotle tartar sauce. Takeout only.

Closed since the beginning of December, one of Cleveland’s favorite Irish pubs reopens March 2. Even better, you don’t have to wait till Friday to order the restaurant’s famous Fish & Chips ($16.50)– two beer-battered cod filets, french fries and house-made coleslaw — because it’s available every day. The kitchen also does a Lenten perch fish fry on Fridays.

This upscale Italian restaurant in the Flats is a special occasion type of place, but who says Friday Fishday can’t be a special occasion? The kitchen kicks it up a notch by battering the fish in Weihenstephaner beer and serving it with parmesan-rosemary potato wedges, coleslaw and, of course, tartar sauce. Available at lunch ($15) and dinner ($24).

Perch and pierogies are the focus of this classic American restaurant’s menu of Lenten specials. Choose from Perch & Pierogies ($25), Yellow Perch & Fries ($22) or add an order of Potato, Kale and Cheese Pierogies ($16) as a starter or side. Looking for something different? The restaurant, with locations in Westlake, Strongsville and Hudson, also features a new fish special every Friday.

You can order it the classic way ($13) with fries and coleslaw or as a feast ($23), which adds 4-cheese mac n’ cheese and 2 pierogi to your plate. The walleye also comes as a sandwich ($10) or tacos ($15). If you’re in the mood for something else, the kitchen’s Spicy Shrimp & Avocado Tacos ($15) is Lent-compliant.

Come on a Friday and you’ll probably be tempted by this Strongsville restaurant’s Foster’s beer-battered Icelandic cod special, served with house-made slaw, tartar sauce, and pomme frites. But I’m going straight for the New England Lobster Roll ($26.50), a favorite on the menu since the restaurant opened in 2016.

This neighborhood bistro in Chardon serves a variety of Lenten specials, including both starters and entrees, that change every week. The Fish Fry ($16) — tempura-fried Alaskan Blue Cod served with hand-cut fries, dijon root vegetable & kale slaw and thyme remoulade — is available every Friday and Saturday throughout the season.

You probably wouldn’t think of it, but no-meat Friday at a sushi restaurant makes perfect sense. This Lakewood favorite puts a Japanese twist on the typical fish fry, offering Sapporo-battered cod ($18) with togarashi fries, Asian slaw and wasabi tartar sauce. The sushi bar also serves up a few Lenten-themed rolls. Specials are available Thursday-Saturday until Easter.
