YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Educators and community members gathered in Wean Park in Youngstown on Friday to protest Ohio House Bills 327 and 322.
HB 327 suggests banning schools from teaching, advocating or promoting divisive concepts.
HB 322 suggests revising teaching on certain current events and concepts related to race and gender in public schools.
Both of the proposed bills have Republican support.
Participants in the protest wanted to be able to “teach the truth” about society. You want to teach children to think critically when looking at society and history.

One educator said this doesn’t necessarily change the curriculum – it changes the way it’s taught.
“We need to look at how the curriculum was historically written because the problem is that so many things have been left out of the curriculum,” said teacher Heather Smith.
Smith said teachers remain in a gray area when trying to teach things that are not in text or lesson plans, but are truths left to us.
Other educators and parishioners shared unity and truthfulness about the nation’s history.
“This is important work. More teachers need to do that and they need to educate, ”said Smith.
