YOUNGSTOWN – South Side Academy’s kindergarten teachers will soon be riding bikes in their physical education class.
An attempt is made to that All Kids Bike Kindergarten PE program to school at 1400 Oak Hill Ave.
The program equips schools with everything they need to teach children how to ride: teacher training and certification, a structured eight-hour curriculum, a fleet of Strider 14x bikes, pedal conversion kits, fully adjustable helmets, and a five-year support plan. The program was launched in 2018 and has been adopted by 343 schools in 42 states.
“Cycling has many mental health benefits that would positively add to the lives of our students,” said Kristine Hunchuck, dean of studies at the South Side Academy, in a press release. “Cycling can help build a child’s self-esteem and support goal-oriented behavior. In addition, cycling has been shown to reduce the level of stress hormones in the body and thus help a child to sleep more restfully. “
The kindergarten sports program is aimed at children of all abilities and aims to teach healthy habits from a young age.
“One of the best ways to get kids active is to get them excited about bikes,” said Ryan McFarland, board member of All Kids Bike. “It’s a skill that will serve you in life.”
