COLUMBUS, Ohio – A family-friendly protest in Columbus helps parents explain current events to their children.
The protest outside City Hall on Saturday drew hundreds of people, mostly families.
Artists performed songs, people danced, children wrote messages on the sidewalk, and the crowd sang. They yelled, “Black Lives Matter” and “Say her name – Ma’Khia Bryant.”
Jeff and Sarah Delcamp brought their two children to the event.
“I realize how privileged I am every day and I just want to be better for my children [and] for my students, “said Sarah Delcamp who is a teacher.” I know we can do better. “
Jeff Delcamp said he had a tough conversation with his six-year-old son, the black man, after he died Ma’Khia Bryant.
Bryant was fatally shot by a Columbus police officer Nicholas Reardon on Tuesday.
The video with the body camera shows Bryant poking another woman with a knife.
“It’s very unfortunate that he can’t rely on calling 911 for help, but I can,” said Delcamp. “I hope so [my kids] get the feeling that there are a lot of people who care, and although things seem really bad, there are a lot of good people in the world trying to change something. “
Symone Rhein said she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to get her three children to protest or not, but then she remembered an experience she had as a child.
“My mother brought me to Nelson Mandela as a child. I certainly did not understand how difficult it is that he is released from prison after such a long time and that we have the opportunity to hear him speak, but I am 40 years old old Now and I remember it.
