New push to return USPS mail processing middle to Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A new push has been made to address the postal service issues in northwest Ohio. Lots of people have delays and letters, bills and medication don’t arrive on time.

Now Toledo’s regional chamber of commerce is joining the fight. A change in the system could have a big effect. Something that people have been asking for for several years.

Ever receive mail from Toledo that lands in Toledo but is postmarked from Michigan? That’s because that area’s mail is processed in the Metroplex near Detroit.

“We are in a region with the worst on-time mail delivery in the country. Our residents deserve better, said Brian Dicken of the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The board is trying to change this. It sent a letter to Toledo’s mayor and the city council, calling on all sides to support a council resolution to bring mail processing back to Toledo. The need arises partly from new data from chamber members.

“We conducted a survey. About 70% of respondents said they were negatively affected, ”said Dicken.

Businesses have late invoices, late payments, additional costs for expedited shipping of late items, and supply chain issues.

“This is a problem. It affects our residents, it affects our businesses, and we have to find a solution that really helps move the region forward,” said Dicken.

The U.S. Postal Service even illustrated the problems with the data it sent to the chamber. The reports show time performance for first class mail from July through September 2020. The Detroit area has some of the worst results, being the last dead in two part mail for two day mail.

“We’re definitely taking the problem to a different level than it may have been thought in the past,” said Dicken. “Make sure we focus on the impact on residents and the impact on businesses.”
