Congress recently approved the second phase of the Coronavirus Aid, Aid, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which includes direct cash grants for qualified college students to help offset financial challenges caused by the disruption to campus operations following the COVID. 19 pandemic.
Columbus State University awards grant amounts based on each student’s eligibility status. The award amount is based on the number of credit hours (maximum 15 credit hours) students were enrolled in on March 25, 2021 and their Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) based on student responses to the free application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA). The CSU expects the funds to be paid out by March 31.
“We understand that these resources may not be enough to cope with all of the difficulties faced by all students. However, we hope these resources will ease the pressures some of them face. We all at Columbus State University know how challenging and stressful this time is for everyone, and we appreciate your patience as we overcome these difficult times together, “said Chris Markwood, CSU President.
The authorization status is divided into one of the following categories:
- Eligible for funds: Students who are enrolled in the spring semester 2021 on March 25, 2021, have submitted a FAFSA 2020-21 and are not otherwise excluded (see point 3 below).
- Currently not eligible: Students who are enrolled in the spring semester 2021 on March 25, 2021 and have not submitted a FAFSA 2020-21 and who are not otherwise excluded (see point 3 below). These students have until May 9, 2021 to complete and submit FAFSA 2020-21 (https://studentaid.gov/) in order to receive HEERF II Student Grant Aid.
- Ineligible: Students are not eligible for financial assistance if they are not US citizens or permanent residents. In addition, temporary, double enrollment, continuing education and former students are not eligible.
Details on distribution in spring 2021
- Amount to be distributed: $ 2,113,977.96
- Eligible CSU students: approx. 5,600
- Eligible Credit Hours: 62,464
Students whose EFC is less than $ 5,712 will receive $ 37.26 per credit hour, up to a maximum of 15 credit hours.
Students with an EFC greater than $ 5,711 will receive $ 28.56 per credit hour, up to a maximum of 15 credit hours.
The CSU plan complies with federal guidelines and has been approved by the University System of Georgia.
