COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Columbus City Council decided on Monday to approve more than $ 4 million in grants for an affordable housing project on the grounds of a music club where a popular heavy metal guitarist was shot on stage in 2004 .
The council will contribute $ 2.175 million from the 2020 capital budget for the Sinclair Family Apartments located at 5055 Sinclair Avenue, the location of the Alrosa Villa.
On December 8, 2004, an armed man stormed onto the stage of the Alrosa Villa during a performance by Damageplan and shot and killed lead guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbot, 38, several times.
Three other people died in the shooting. It was Jeffrey Thompson, the band’s chief security officer; Nathan Bray, a fan who wanted to help Abbott and Thompson; and Erin Halk, a clerk who tried to disarm the shooter.

The shooter was killed on the spot by the police.
The project comprises three four-story buildings with a total of 180 one-, two-, three- and four-room apartments with the aim of helping low-income families in Columbus.
The council is expected to provide additional grants of $ 2.175 million from the 2021 capital budget.
“By providing project-based vouchers for the project, the CMHA (Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority) is helping Sinclair Family Apartments become a true mixed-income community that serves individuals and families at various levels of affordability,” says the passed legislation Council States.
The project is the result of a public-private partnership between CMHA and The NRP Group.
