Cincinnati public college academics might face COVID-19 vaccine mandate

The remaining CPS educators who have not yet received a vaccination could be forced to do so if school board members approve a vaccination mandate during a Monday evening meeting.

“People are a little nervous about this discussion and I can see why. I understand all of the reasons, ”said Mike Moroski, member of the CPS school board.

Moroski said he was not in favor of a teacher vaccination mandate.

“Personally, I’m a big advocate of vaccines and science, and as a public health worker, I take precautions. That means I’m not elected to make personal decisions,” Moroski said. “I don’t know if I will feel great if I put a mandatory vaccine policy in place.”

As chairing the committee that drafted the proposed vaccine requirement, Moroski stressed that many people were involved. While he said that unions representing teachers and other CPS staff largely oppose a mandate, parents appear to be evenly divided.

CPS mother Carla Blakely is one of those who think that a vaccination order for teachers is a bridge too far. She said she was comfortable sending her daughter back to the classroom at the start of the new school year in August, even if some teachers choose not to roll up their sleeves.

“I will as long as everyone is following the safety precautions – wearing their masks and washing their hands,” Blakely said.

In addition to the possible vote on a vaccine mandate on Monday evening, CPS board members will also discuss whether students will have to continue wearing masks when they return to class in less than two months.
