It’s no secret that the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has given the green light to do what he wants when it comes to the line of scrimmage and what makes it into the playbook.
Interestingly enough. Burrow also holds some meetings during the training camp.
In a fun, in-depth article on Burrow’s comeback offering, The Ringer’s Kevin Clark revealed this, plus some comments from Offensive Coordinator Brian Callahan:
“The coaching staff had Burrow lead some of the offensive meetings with skilled players. “So it’s ‘Hey Yeah’ Marr, I don’t see this, I don’t like the way you ran this, I need you to run it at this depth and at this angle so I know for sure when you will come ‘from.’ So he has these conversations about what he expects is much more powerful than any conversation I will have before them. The more personal responsibility we can give Joe, the better. ‘”
Is that unorthodox or strange? Of course not, but it’s still interesting to see how far Burrow has come despite his strange run-up last year to his rookie year and the fact that he’s rehabilitating a surgically repaired knee.
So when you watch the Bengals offensive this year, keep in mind that Burrow’s fingerprints are everywhere too. The offense is very much a collaboration as it should be.
