The Pentagon, along with other federal agencies, is expected to release a report on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) this month, which includes a detailed analysis of the UFO data as well as plans to centralize future data collection.
In anticipation of the report’s official release, The Enquirer looked back at the decades-long history of UFO sightings in the greater Cincinnati area, with reports ranging from the flying saucer to mysterious lights in the sky.
“Flying disks” or “bright light”?
The term UFO was minted by the US Air Force in 1952 in relation to aerial phenomena that cannot be identified immediately.
Public interest in UFOs first grew after private pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine flying saucers while looking for a Marine Corps transport plane that allegedly crashed on Mount Rainier, Washington in June 1947.
Many of those who encountered UFOs on the spot described a similar metallic saucer or disk. The saucers, usually seen at night or before sunrise, can be seen zigzagging across the sky, sometimes with lights from below.
