Little One, the geriatric polar bear, was “humanely put to sleep” on Saturday morning after kidney failure Zoo announced.
“In my 30-plus year career, I have had the privilege of caring for 17 polar bears in two zoos. All of them were amazing animals to look after, ”said Lisa Vollmer, the zoo’s bear handler, in a statement. “Saying goodbye is always difficult, and it was especially difficult with Little One. He was one of the loosest bears I’ve ever worked with and had a great attitude. “
Staff had recently noticed that Little One wasn’t as interested in its usual activities like peanut butter, swimming, and napping. So the zoo vets did a series of tests and discovered the kidney problem.
Little One was reportedly the second oldest captive polar bear in the United States when it died. The median life expectancy of a male polar bear is 21 years.
The bear was born in 1989 at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to Snowball and Nauyat. He came to Cincinnati in 2007.
“His death leaves a big hole in the hearts of all of us who have taken care of him,” said Vollmer. “Rest in peace, little one. We love you and you will be missed. “
