In two touchdown runs by Caden Brunell, the Columbus Prep soccer team sat in Big Foot in the driver’s seat at halftime on Friday night.

In the second half, Will Cotter took the wheel.

Or rather, the gas.

Cotter flew to Trace Kirchberg for two long touchdown passes in the third quarter – the first for 50 yards and the second for 55 – to open a game with a score as the Cardinals to a 42-12 Rock Valley Small Conference win promoted at Big Foot High School in Walworth.

Cotter added a one-yard TD run of 1 minute and 43 seconds to get a 35-6 in the third, and Brunell who had TD runs of one yard and seven yards in the first half and 175 yards ended on 28 runs (6.3 yards per carry), which ended the game with his third TD scamper of the night.

Columbus’s defense bent but didn’t break, totaling 304 yards of total offense – 255 of which went through the air – but kept the Chiefs down to just 12 points thanks to three takeaways (a fiddly recovery and two interceptions) and 11-thirds. Downstops (Big Foot was two of 13 on the third descent).

Cotter finished the 14-of-19 race for 256 yards, two TDs, and no interceptions. Kirchberg was his main target with seven catches for 176 yards and two points.
